Today's hightea was a revisit to one of 2024’s biggest surprises, the Firewater grille, situated inside the Duxton hotel.
They won a gold plate for their hightea in 2024, a well-deserved recognition. We are in full agreement of this award as we also gave them a very high score last year.
Plus it was Anna's favorite high tea of 2024!
We were welcomed by a very smartly dressed doorman and politely pointed to the location of today’s high tea. Again our greeting was warm, friendly and very efficient.
Our waiter for the afternoon was calm and professional, with an easy approachable demeanor.
Our water preference and tea order was promptly taken and we didn’t have to wait long for today's tower to arrive.
We opted to switch things around a little and begin with the scones, enjoying them while they were still warm, rather than after the savoury items, by which time they would have cooled.
What a fabulous idea this turned out to be, they were perfection! We couldn’t fault them in any way. The size while delicate , was enough, the texture was soft and bouncy without a hint of sponginess.
The accompanying jam was delightful, you can always tell when the jam is lovingly made in-house and not store bought. The cream, smooth and luscious with just enough thickness to hold its place “ontop" of the jam.
Yes, we spread our jam first and then the cream. Interestingly Anna used to do it the opposite way! Who's to say what's right or wrong ? when it comes to jam and cream placement :)
We loved the scones so much we ate all four and could have happily ordered more and settled with just scones and tea for the afternoon. They were that good but we forced ourselves to move away from the scones and on to the savouries.
These seemed to be a repeat from our previous visit back in June 2024 just, without the beef tenderloin and mustard horseradish sauce.
We would have liked a new menu after more than six months, however, everything was still delicious.
Next we moved on to the sweets, again these where very familiar, similar with small twists in flavor. Mandarin tiramisu instead of the original passion strawberry tiramisu. But these are small points. Overall we found them to be delicate and balanced in flavor and importantly very pretty to look at.
This time for our cocktail we chose the Chambord Cosmopolitan, a little $$ at $23 but she was easy and delicious and very quickly enjoyed.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our second visit to the Fire water grille and would highly recommend for a girlie get-together, an elegant hens gathering or baby shower. Finally we have to mention the harpist, such a beautiful instrument and added that extra something to the overall atmosphere. A lovely touch.
We score the Firewater grille a solid 8 with an extra half point for the exceptional scones.
